How to Choose the Right Football Size (Size 3 vs 4 vs 5)
Football sizes explained: which ball suits which age group, why size matters for technique, and how to pick the right one.
Using the right size ball isn't just about rules. A ball that's too big or heavy makes it harder for young players to control, strike and develop good technique. Here's a quick guide.
The three main sizes
- Size 3 — usually for players under 8. Smaller and lighter, ideal for first touches.
- Size 4 — usually for players aged 8 to 12. A step between youth and full-size football.
- Size 5 — the standard match size for players aged 12 and over, including adults.
Why the right size matters
A correctly sized ball lets players strike through it cleanly, control it with confidence and build habits that carry into the full-size game. Training with the wrong size can make skills harder to learn.
Check with your league or coach
Age ranges are typical guidelines. Local leagues, schools and academies sometimes set their own rules, so it's worth checking before you buy.
